ZUNIL  HISTORY AND INFORMATION

Zunil, first known as Santa Catarina Zunil, was founded in 1529.   Located in a beautiful mountain setting, Zunil is famous for its textiles and is one of the homes of a Mayan saint, San Simon.  This unusual cigar-smoking saint is moved to a different house each year and can be found by asking the locals. Also, children often ask you if you want them to  take you there for a small tip.  You will find him propped up in a chair receiving offerings of rum, cigarettes, candles and flowers. San Simon celebrations happen once a year, on October 28.

Also worthy of a visit in Zunil is the beautiful Spanish church, known for its ornate silver alter with eight pairs of serpentine columns.
