SAN SIMÓN HISTORY AND INFORMATION

San Simón a Mayan Saint. This unusual cigar-smoking saint is moved to a different house each year and can be found by asking the locals. Also, children often ask you if you want them to take you there for a small tip.  You will find him propped up in a chair receiving offerings of rum, cigarettes, candles and flowers. San Simon celebrations happen once a year, on October 28. San Simón is quite popular in the country.  There are many in Guatemala,  and in Antigua there is another San Simón very well known by the ladino population.  There is also another one in Santiago Atitlán popular with the natives.
