MOMOSTENANGO HISTORY
The ancient ceremony of
Guaxaquib Batz (Eight Monkeys) is still celebrated in Momostenango.
The alter mounds, composed of broken pottery, lie in the hills surrounding
the town. Every 260 days, the New Year purification ritual begins
with a candle burning ceremony at the church. The next day, a
procession goes to Chuit Mesabal, a hilltop alter right outside of
town. There, the local people offer the Gods pieces of pottery which
have broken throughout the year.
