WATER RECREATION
The Río Naranjo
has Class II and III rapids (July to October) and
tour operators offer one to five day trips, with side trips to Mayan sites and
hot springs in Petén.
AVAILABLE TOURS:
The Río Usumacinta
is a slower-moving river that winds through
jungles. It has a few Class I and II rapids. The river links the the
lowlands of Mexico and the Petén with the Guatemalan highlands and trips
ranging from one to nine days are offered.
AVAILABLE TOURS:
Along the
Río Dulce, a slow-moving jungle river, there are both
private motor boats available for hire or the public mail boat, which goes up
and down the river twice a week, all this in the area of lake Izabal
and Rio Dulce.
CAVES
ON BOAT
Another type of boat trip available in Guatemala are the cave-exploring
trips. There are excursions available to explore the Candelaria
caves in Cobán, a
network of caves connected by underground rivers. Also, the Rió Chiquibul
trip offered by some of the tour operators includes visits to sacred Mayan
caves, as well as the Class II rapids.
