WATER RECREATION IN GUATEMALA

WATER RECREATION

The Río Naranjo has Class II and III rapids (July to October) and tour operators offer one to five day trips, with side trips to Mayan sites and hot springs in Petén.

AVAILABLE TOURS:

The Río Usumacinta is a slower-moving river that winds through jungles.  It has a few Class I and II rapids.  The river links the the lowlands of Mexico and the Petén with the Guatemalan highlands and trips ranging from one to nine days are offered.

AVAILABLE TOURS:

Along the Río Dulce, a slow-moving jungle river, there are both private motor boats available for hire or the public mail boat, which goes up and down the river twice a week, all this in the area of lake Izabal and Rio Dulce.

CAVES ON BOAT

Another type of boat trip available in Guatemala are the cave-exploring trips.  There are excursions available to explore the Candelaria caves in Cobán, a network of caves connected by underground rivers.  Also, the Rió Chiquibul trip offered by some of the tour operators includes visits to sacred Mayan caves, as well as the Class II rapids.
