For those who like to hike, Guatemala has a wealth of possibilities, ranging
from climbing volcanoes to gentle walks through coffee finca areas.
The national parks and reserves are wonderful places to hike and see the
wildlife at the same time. For example, in addition to seeing the ruins at
Tikal, there are hiking trails that run throughout the Tikal National Park.
Around Lake Atitlán there are also many trails. You can even hike
around the whole lake.
The hiking possibilities in Guatemala are limitless. Since many of the
local people have walked everywhere for hundreds of years, there are foot paths
leading outside of virtually every village which often lead to other
villages. Most of these trails will not be on any map, but just ask the
locals and you're sure to find many wonderful hikes.
You can also arrange, through many of the tour groups, to go on hiking
expeditions with a guide. Many of those go through the nature reserves.
