VOLCANO CLIMBING

Following is a list of the most popular volcanoes to climb in Guatemala.  The easiest way to go is to find a guided tour, for the volcanoes that have that.  Check at travel agencies and on bulletin boards such as Dona Luisa's in Antigua for tours, however we will provide some information about companies that specialized only in volcano climbing. If you go on your own, make sure to have a map.  You can buy them at many of the bookstores in Antigua.

IN GUATEMALA CITY AREA:

PACAYA VOLCANO

Peak:       8,420

Ascent:    2 hours

Decent:    1 hour

Location:  45 minutes from Guatemala City

At a height of 8,420 feet, Pacaya Volcano offers the climber a spectacular look at an active volcano, complete with boiling lava and occasional spewing of steam and ash.  The climb is relatively easy as you can drive first to the village of San Vicente de Pacaya and then walk a couple of hours to the summit.

Organized trips are numerous and easy to find from bulletin boards and travel agencies in Antigua.

TO EXPERIENCE A VOLCANO IN ERUPTION IS AMAZING

A word of warning:  there have been numerous armed robberies and attacks recently on Pacaya and one should check with locals before attempting the trip alone.  Some of the tour groups provide armed security guards.

Remember also, to not get too close to the crater as it does erupt.  And be sure to take warm clothing because the summit does get windy and cold.

How to get thereIt is more likely than not that at least one person in Antigua will hand you a flyer offering trips to Pacaya.  You can also check with the many travel agencies or look at the bulletin board at Dona Luisa's. It is not recommended that you make the trip alone.

IN CHIQUIMULILLA:

TECUAMBURRO VOLCANO

Peak:       12,376 feet

Ascent:    2 hours

Decent:    1 hour

Location:  Chiquimulilla

This is one of the easiest volcanoes to climb in Guatemala and also offers a pleasant hike through beautiful coffee plantations.  There are twin peaks, which are covered by forest.  One of the most interesting sites is a lake of white sulphurous water, called Lago Ixpaco.

How to get there:  The trail starts on Route 16 which is off of the Pacific Coastal Highway north of Chiquimulilla.
