| Following
is a list of the most popular volcanoes to climb in Guatemala. The
easiest way to go is to find a guided tour, for the volcanoes that have that. Check at travel agencies and on bulletin boards such as Dona
Luisa's in Antigua for tours, however we will provide some information
about companies that specialized only in volcano climbing. If you go on your own, make sure to
have a map. You can buy maps at many of the bookstores in
Antigua.

SANTA
MARIA
Peak:
12,376 feet
Ascent:
5 hours
Decent:
3 hours
Location:
Quetzaltenango
One of
the active volcanoes, Santa Maria is a moderately difficult climb but worth
the trouble once you get to the top. The views are spectacular and you
can also see the Santiaguito crater below, which often provides an exciting
eruption of flashing light.
How to
get there: A trail starts in the town of Llanos de Pinal, which is about 5
miles west of Quetzaltenango.

SANTIAGUITO
Peak:
9,000 feet
Ascent:

Location:
Quetzaltenango (Xela)

Another
very active volcano, Santiaguito, is an easier climb but more dangerous
because of the toxic gases emitted from the crater and the frequent
landslides. It is well worth it to go on an organized tour, as several
climbers have died in the last few years.
How
to get there: The best way to go is to look for a tour through
travel agencies or posted on bulletin boards. Trails start in the
villages of Llanos de Pinal and La Isla.
