Guatemala
is a great place for bicycling. You can easily get around some of
the smaller cities, like Antigua, and also travel from village to village
on the same trails that the locals walk. Long-distance bicycling,
from city to city on the highway, is also doable, but a little more
dangerous - as with long-distance biking on highways in any country.
If you're taking a bike with you, a
mountain bike would be the best choice, because of unpaved and sometimes
rocky roads. A thick-tired bike is almost a necessity in Antigua
because of the cobblestone streets.
You can also easily rent bicycles in many
of the areas where tourists visit, such as: Antigua,
Panajachel and Quetzaltenango.
Bicycle riding is not recommended
in
Guatemala City because of the heavy traffic and lack of bike lanes.
Most towns have somewhere that you can get
your bicycle fixed, if needed. Just ask around and you're sure to
find help.
