Once an ancient suburb of the great city of Copán,
Quirigua is one of the
last visited archeological sites in Guatemala. The site is known for its
unusually tall carved monuments, as well as for the acropolis, located south of
the Great Plaza.
The acropolis was once the home and administration center of Quirigua's
elite. Part of a detailed mosaic wall still remains on the western
platform.
Like Copán, Quirigua has some of the large rocks that were carved into faces
of fearsome-looking mythical creatures.
In addition to exploring the ruins, many varieties of birds
(and mosquitos!)
can be seen in the lush tropical forest. Quirigua's land used to be part of
the United Fruit Company (who ruled the country for decades), now Chiquita
banana. It is good land where huge plantations of bananas
were
cultivated.
