Puerto Barrios, the capital of the department of Izabal, was founded in 1883
by President Justo Rufino Barrios. There was a need for a railway connecting
Guatemala City with the Atlantic Coast, and also for a port to ship overseas. Within a few years, Puerto Barrios had become the most important
port in all of Central America. It was used by the United Fruit Company to
ship bananas and by the coffee growers to ship coffee.
Today, Puerto Barrios is home to seedy bars and strip
joints. It is not a safe place to walk around at night.
