INFORMATION ON SANTA CATARINA PALOPO

This village is famous for the fine quality of huipiles (hand-woven blouses with intricate embroidery) that the women produce. The women still use the traditional dress which includes the beautiful turquoise huipile.

The people of Santa Catarina were some of the few Indians who fished in Lake Atitlan. Unlike many other villages, the soil was considered to be very poor for farming. Also, they were aided in their fishing by a number of springs feeding hot water into the lake on the outskirts of the village.

How to get here:  Just take a bus from Panajachel, it is a short ride.

Hotels

Hotels from $40 to $60 for a  double: Villa Santa Catarina has a wonderful view of the lake and an excellent restaurant. Recommended
