INFORMATION ON SAN PEDRO LA LAGUNA  IN LAKE ATITLAN

History: Altitude:1,650 mts. Lying at the foot of the San Pedro volcano, San Pedro de la Laguna is the destination of backpackers from around the world who are looking for a relatively undiscovered spot to kick back for a while.

This small village dates back to pre-Columbian times, when it was inhabited by the Tzutujils. Cobblestones streets make up the central part of the town. People are very friendly, warm and make you very welcome. The huipils or the women's blouses are colorful and represent who they are. Their native language is Tzutujil same as in Santiago Atitlan. How to get here: You need to take a boat that departs at the end of the Calle Santander, on the beach, just ask, everybody knows how to get there. It takes about 1:10hr. Fare is about 2 dollars, locals pay less. 

What to doLearn Spanish: You can learn Spanish here,  4hrs daily a week for less than 100 dollars, including 3 meals, and room and board.

Local Artisans: There is a group of incredible craftsmen displaying their work in Cafe Arte. Also there is a Museum where Feliciano Pop displays his work as well as other local artisans.

CLIMBING: If you want to climb the volcano San Pedro, there are people that ask you if you want a guide, and it is worth it. Also, you can ride a horse for less than $5.00 an hour. Hiking around the lake is another wonderful experience, just bring with you a bottle of drinking water. MOST POPULAR RESTAURANTS: There are several places to eat that are inexpensive. Cafe Arte is great, and Comedor Ranchon also has good food. There is a vegetarian restaurant  at the Thermal Waters.  There is an inexpensive and good restaurant called Pinoccio with a nice view of the lake, very popular with the gringos, breakfast here is the best meal. Nick's Restaurant has good vegetables soups, and a variety of cheeses.  Night Life: Enjoy the San Pedro nights at Nick's bar , is the place to hang out and is very popular.
