PANAJACHEL HISTORY
After the Tzutuhil Indians were
defeated by the Spanish, and their Cakchiquel allies, as part of the Spanish
conquest of Guatemala, Panajachel became the central location on Lake Atitlan
for converting the Indians of the area to Catholicism. The famous last battle
between the Spanish and the Tzutuhil took place on the shores of the lake where
the Hotel Tzutuhil now stands.

After the battle was lost, the
Franciscans set up a church and monastery and began their conversions of
the Indians. The original facade of the church still stands today.
The three volcanoes around the
lake, San Pedro 9,986 feet (2999mts), Toliman 11,788 feet (3540mts) and
Atitlan 11,811 feet (3547) make this
lake unique in its nature. Also these volcanoes can be ascended. The San
Pedro volcano is the most popular one to climb and you start from San Pedro Town.

In addition to Panajachel,
there are many small villages scattered around the
lake that are worth visiting. Many can be reached by land,
and all can be reached by boat.
