Santa Elena is the city business center of Peten,
Banks, Stores and so on can be found here. The best part to stay is in the
Hotels close to the lake. Also the bus station is located in this here as well
as the airport.
Many years ago, the Guatemalan Government start
given away free land so the area could be populated and many people from
different regions of the country start moving here, by those days the forest was
still preserve, but the lacking of awareness and knowledge for the environment
protection has being so poor that really hurt the rainforest.
