Flores sits on a small island in Lake
Petén Itzá (Warning: swimming in the
lake is not recommended, as the water isn't too clean).
Flores is the
capital of the department of Petén. The town is built on top of a hill
and is quite picturesque with its cobblestone streets and multi-colored
houses. Here the Mayans built the city Itzá, Tayasal and
Cortez passed through here in 1525. Opposite of Flores, on the mainland, are the larger towns of Santa
Elena and San Benito. All three cities can be used as stopping-off points on the
way to and from Tikal ruins.
