Where Flores now sits, the Mayan city of Tayasal
was one of the cities to be
conquered by the Spanish. In 1525 Cortéz made a visit to the town, where
his wounded horse died. The Mayans erected a statue in honor of the
wounded horse and it became an idol, until it was destroyed by the Franciscans
nearly one hundred years later. The Spanish, who eventually conquered
Tayasal in 1697, had ignored the Mayan city for almost 200 years - probably
because of its remote location - while they conquered the rest of the
country.
How to get
here: Flores is about two miles from
Santa Elena, where there is an airport. The
best way to get to Peten is by flying. These airlines offer flights from
Guatemala City: Aeroquetzal, Aerovias de Guatemala, and Tikal
Jets. There are also buses than run from Guatemala City, but the
ride is at least 12 hours long and is not recommended. However, if you decide
to take a bus, we
recommend the Linea Dorada Bus Line. Click
here for transportation schedules around the country.
