WHAT TO DO AND SEE IN IZABAL

HIKING: There is a nice 50 minute walk from Castillo de San Felipe fortress (about 1.5 miles from El Relleno village) to the San Felipe village along the river, recommended if you are in the area.

WINDSURFING: Guatemala has three great windsurfing spots: Lake Atitlán, Lake Izabal, and Rio Dulce.  The best season is from October through May, with November and December being the windiest months.

FISHING: Izabal, also offers good fishing.  You should probably bring your own gear, as it can be difficult to find.  Deep-sea fishing on the Pacific Coast can be arranged through tour operators. You can charter a boat and be on your way!

SAILING AND BOATING:

One of the best places for sailing and boating is the Rio Dulce area, from Lake Izabal all the way up to Belize. You'll easily be able to charter a boat, with or without a guide.  There are also marinas where you can dock your own boat.

Another marina where you can dock your own boat is in San Jose, on the Pacific Coast.

COLONIAL MONUMENTS: About 1.5 miles from El Relleno village (the bridge) on the south side of the lake, there is a Spanish fortress and castle, El Castillo de San Felipe, built in 1652.

LEARN SPANISH : There is one Spanish School at the Finca Tatin.

PLACES OF INTEREST AROUND LAKE IZABAL: El Castillo de San Felipe  a Spanish fortress, Finca El Paraíso a beautiful working farm in the jungle with a hot waterfall and pools.  A popular place; recommended.

TOURS: If you don't have the time, take a tour from any of the travel agencies we list here. There are several travel companies that offer tours to the most important places of Izabal. See list of recently tours and specials for Rio Dulce and Lake Izabal posted by several travel agencies.
