CASTILLO SAN FELIPE  HISTORY

Castillo San Felipe, located near the Rio Dulce Bridge, is a small fort built by the Spanish.  It was built in 1652 with the purpose of protecting the locals from the British pirates, who were known for their plundering.

The restored fort is a national historic monument and offers great views of the lake.

HOW TO GET HERE: You can either walk from San Felipe village which is a nice one hour walk or take a bus.  Or, if you are at El Remate, you can get a boat ride for about $6 dollars. 

ACCOMMODATIONS : Hotels up to 15$ for double rooms: Hotel Don Humberto also Rancho Escondido Hotel is good. Hotesl from $15 and up : Viñas del Lago Hotel, recommended. 

RESTAURANTS:

  BUDGET: Cafetería Selva Tropical, basic.

  MIDDDLE: Each hotel has a restaurant, so you can eat at Don Humberto or, 10 minutes from Castillo de San Felipe, is Rancho Escondido Hotel that also has a nice restaurant

. DELUXE: The restaurant at Viñas del Lago is excellent, recommended.
