Located on the site of the pre-Columbian kingdom of the
Mams,
Huehuetenango is today the commercial hub of this region of Guatemala.
Known by the locals as "Huehue," this town is a good spot to spend the
night when taking day trips to the outlying villages and sites.
Huehue's economy is based on agriculture and mining. There
is also a good amount of craft production: pottery, musical instruments and
palm-frond weaving. Most of the people in Huehue are ladinos.
The Plaza Central has a fountain and a relief map of the
area. It is a pleasant place to stop awhile, and to sit on one of the
park benches and talk to the local kids who wander by. Because of the
relatively few tourists, it is also a good place to study Spanish.
