Guatemala City,is a nice city known as "Guate" by the locals.  It is the capital and largest city of Guatemala.  It is the business and cultural center of the country and most travelers will find themselves in Guatemala City for one reason or another.

Unfortunately, in recent years the traffic and air contamination in Guatemala City has gone from bad to worse.  Try to avoid entering or leaving the city during morning and evening commute hours.

While in Guatemala City to get your visa extended, go to the American Express office or do some shopping in Zone 9. It's worthwhile to visit some of the sites.  There are a few interesting museums like Museo Nacional de Historia 9a Street 9-70 Zone 1, open daily from 10am to 4pm. The Popol Vuh museum at the east end of 6a Calle in Zone 10, close to the Ave La Reforma, has a copy of the Dresden Codex.  Museo Ixchel de Traje Indígena right on the campus of the University Francisco Marroquin, in zone 10,  is worth visiting. The Museum of Archeology and Ethnography across the 11 Ave from the international airport in zone 13, and the Mercado Central is a great place to find handicrafts from all over Guatemala.  For history buffs, the churches and some of the older architecture can make your venture into the capital less painful.

Getting around: Guatemala city is divided into numbered zones.  Zone 1 is the center part of the city where you'll find the Central Market, the downtown area, and the oldest parts of the city.  Zones 9 and 10 are the wealthy residential sections which include some of the nicest hotel and restaurants as well as exclusives boutiques.

NOTE: HOW TO READ ADDRESSES IN THE CITY. When given an address in Guatemala City, the first thing you need to do is note what zone it's in. This is important, as the same street numbers can be located in more than one zone.  Then, simply locate the Avenue or Calle, the cross street and the street number.  For example, 3 Avenida 8-42, Zone 1 would be close to where 3rd Avenida crosses 8th Calle, and the number on the building is 42.
