SAN JUAN CHAMELCO  HISTORY

The village of San Juan Chamelco, about six miles south of Cobàn, is known for its underground river and its braided or twisted textiles depicting butterflies, ducks, and pineapples.  The town has a colonial church and convent.

There are some interesting sites close to San Juan Chamelco, such as a beautiful waterfall, called La Presa, and the many bathing resorts along the Ŕo Ch́o.  Also close by are the archeological sites Sakajut and Chichèn.

 

HOW TO GET HERE: Take a bus from Coban to San Juan Chamelco. 

ACCOMMODATIONS: There is kind of a hotel about 3 miles away, in the village Chanajeb. They rent bungalows that run between $15 to $20 per person, and the meals are included. Recommended
