The small town of San Cristòbal Verapaz sits on the banks of Lago Cristòbal.
Legend has it that the lake was created by the flooding of the area after
conflicts between a Spanish priest and the local Pokmochì people.
The Pokmochì'-speaking people claim that they were the very early
inhabitants of the area, and that they arrived before the Quiche. When the
Spanish arrived, the Pokmochì sided with the Spanish against rival tribes.
Inside the 16th Century Dominican built church, there is a beautiful silver
altar as well as a statue of San Joaquìn.
