Chichicastenango is an Indian town normally quiet during the week, except for
Thursdays and Sundays which are market days.
The market days are the main attractions of the
place. Just remember, you won't find too many bargains unless you know how to
bargain. Bargaining is fun anyway! Chichicastenango is a Quiche Indian tribe and
the dialect spoken here is called Quiche . Right on the main plaza there is the
Santo Tomas church and its Dominican Monastery built in 1542.

This is home of
the famous Mayan Indian Bible "Popol-Vuh" which is a manuscript of the
Mayan mythology. On the opposite side of the church there is another small church
called the Calvary. As you can see, this is part of the Spanish Catholic
tradition. About a mile from the city, on the South West of the park on top of
the hill there is a pagan site called PASCUAL ABAJ (Mayan God).

RESTAURANTS:
MIDDLE: The best
restaurants are inside the Hotels, like Santo Tomas, Maya Inn, usually packed
with tourist groups. For a modest
price (BUDGET)
you can eat at the Hotel Chugüila which has good food and also on
market days there are comedores just right inside, inexpensive.
ENTERTAINMENT: Chichi is not
known for having a night life. You can have some drinks at the big Hotel Bars.
Again, Maya Inn and Santo Tomas are the best ones, and you can listen to the Marimba
playing.
