Monterrico has the best beach on Guatemala's Pacific
coast and has become well known for its two nearby nature preserves: Biotopo
Monterrico and Hawaii National Park, as well as the Tortugario
Monterrico, a center that is protecting the endangered olive turtle.
The black sand beach stretches for miles and miles and is a great place to
relax and enjoy the
sunsets but swimming is not recommended unless you are a strong swimmer.
There is a strong undertow and the waves crash down quite forcefully.

HOW TO GET
HERE: The best
way is to take a shuttle bus from Antigua direct to Monterrico for about $25
round trip per passenger; it takes about 2:45 hours, The Adventure Travel
and Turansa offers this service on Saturday and Sundays, also other shuttles buses make this trip,
recommended. Also you can take a
first class bus that goes to San Salvador at the terminals of Zone 4 and Zone 13
and ask the driver to drop you off at Taxisco town and then from there you can
take another small bus to the beach town la Avellana, which is only about 30 minutes
away, then you can take a public boat for less than a dollar and it will take
you to Monterrico. There are also 3 direct buses from Guatemala City to la
Avellana, leaving the bus terminal in Zone 4 at 10:30, 12:30 and 14.30 with la
cubanita bus Line. NOTE: At the Baule
