Founded in 1543, Antigua is a beautiful colonial town that can be difficult to leave, with
its friendly atmosphere, cobblestone streets and restored ruins.
Antigua was the capital of Guatemala until 1773, when it was destroyed by the Santa Marta earthquake.
 Now this beautiful city faces other threats, environmental pollution and cultural pollution,
which are destroying one of the most beautiful gems left from the colonial times. There is an
organization working hard and trying to save the city "SALVEMOS
ANTIGUA" .

There is definitely an
international ambiance, considering that many of the businesses
and beautiful homes are owned by
foreigners. Behind the walls, the colonial homes look like the Santos family's
home on the
left. Restaurants offer an international selection of foods.

 EASTER
CELEBRATION: Holy Week is the biggest celebration in this town and
in the entire country. DON'T MISS IT. The
celebration starts on Palm Sunday at 3pm, with the procession from La Merced.
 There are activities and processions every day of the week leading up to Easter.
The local people make
beautiful rugs from colored sawdust the night before Good Friday. The Good
Friday procession starts at 8 am from La Merced. Be sure to make your hotel reservation in advance
as it can be difficult to find a place to stay.
